Tons of compost material - wasted in a landfill
It's hard to visit the landfill in Minden and drive by the tons of compost-able material that are dumped there. Soil in Haliburton County is poor to start with so it's hard to comprehend that someone would toss out something that could/should be useful to them or someone else. To make matters worse, this pile occupies a significant portion of the landfill site which in itself has a limited life span. The quicker it fills up, the quicker it shuts down.
Compost for the Food Crusade gardens
To keep our gardens growing (and not spend thousands on top soil/fertilizer, we compost EVERYTHING. We even bring in material from other areas so we have enough. It all goes into the gardens. The result? Great soil that can grow just about anything.
What can YOU do?
A load of hay from the HHOA
Thanks to the Haliburton Highland's Outdoors Association for donating a load of hay to the Food Crusade composting program. We will till it into our gardens and it will make great soil by spring. By the way, this is the second year that they have done this.
